Lost Animal

Lost Animal? What to do!

The following steps should assist you in locating your pet:

1. Visit the Johnson County Animal Control Shelter at 1061 Hospital Rd., Franklin. Bring along a picture of your pet, and fill out a lost pet card.  If your animal is a purebred, check with the breed rescue groups.  Breed rescues can be found by searching the internet or calling the Humane Society for information. Go to the Animal Shelter at least every three days to be sure your pet is not there. By law, stray animals need only be held for five (5) days before being placed for adoption or euthanasia.

2. Because people can describe animals in so many different ways, make sure that you keep current photos of your pet to help others help you have a happy reunion.

3. Call or email the Humane Society of Johnson County to report a lost dog.  The Society keeps records of missing and found animals and makes every attempt to match them.

4. Place a lost pet ad in the Johnson County paper, The Daily Journal at 736-7101.  This is a free service to you.  Don’t forget to read the found ads everyday!

5. Post flyers (click here for a lost animal flyer template)

6. Don’t just look for your dog, listen!  Barking dogs could mean your feline or pooch is near.

7. Don’t give up!  Sometimes it takes a while for pets to turn up.

And once your pet is home again, consider having them microchipped.  One of the first things that shelters, humane societies and veterinarians do when they are presented with a “stray” animal is scan it for a microchip.  That microchip contains all the information needed to ensure your pet finds it way home.
